let's talk about fabrics: viscose

viscose

In the universe of carefully selected fabrics for Mason's collections, viscose shines for its splendor and soft elegance. This fabric, famous for its soft drape, is the preferred choice for those who aspire to wear garments that embody a perfect balance between refinement and comfortable fit. Viscose bears witness to Mason's commitment to searching for the finest materials, to provide its customers not only with a piece of clothing but with a unique sensory experience that caresses the skin and captivates the eye.

The history and evolution of viscose

The history of viscose, begins around the mid-nineteenth century, when the French industry enters a crisis due to a disease affecting silkworms, damaging the production of the precious fabric. At that point, Louis Pasteur, none other than the inventor of pasteurization and vaccines, was called upon to find a solution and revive the French industry. That solution is called viscose and is, essentially, a silk reproduced in the laboratory. In fact, viscose is produced by dissolving cellulose in a process involving sodium hydroxide and carbon disulfide. Once the viscous material is dissolved in a solution and left to rest, what is obtained from it is then transformed back into fibrous cellulose. The fibers obtained from the entire process are so versatile that they can be used as a substitute for other fabrics, from cotton to silk.
